We help fintech, payment, remittance, e-wallet and crypto-related businesses obtain a Small Payment Institution license in Poland. Our team prepares the KNF application package, AML/CFT documentation, business plan, risk framework and supports you through the full registration process.

What is a Small Payment Institution / SPI License in Poland?

A Small Payment Institution (SPI) is a regulated way to provide payment services in Poland based on an entry in the KNF (Polish Financial Supervision Authority) register.

SPI registration is required for payment service provision in Poland. Without it, companies face regulatory and banking friction that can block operations entirely.

By registering as an SPI, your company gets a compliant foundation to operate in Poland with statutory limits (EUR 1.5M average monthly transaction cap), credibility with banks and partners, and a scalable path to a full KIP license.

  • Polish company setup and registered address required.
  • Owner & management disclosure with clean criminal record criteria.
  • Operational readiness including volume calculation capability.
  • AML/CFT framework with written procedures and risk assessment.
  • KNF-ready application package submission.
  • Statutory volume limit: EUR 1.5M average monthly transactions.

SPI License Cost in Poland

Compare the two main routes to obtaining an SPI license in Poland: registering a new Small Payment Institution from scratch or acquiring a ready-made dormant SPI company for faster market entry. Pricing depends on the business model, scope of payment services, documentation requirements and KNF-related support.

*Ready-made SPI availability is limited and each structure must be reviewed before acquisition.

SPI License Poland FAQ — Costs, Process, Services & Ready-Made MIP

An SPI can offer: cash acceptance and payout, payment execution (including credit-funded payments), payment instrument issuance, acquiring, and money remittance. These cover most core payment activities needed by fintech and payment companies.
SPI is designed for activity carried out in Poland. KNF takes a cautious interpretation on border-crossing operations. For international-scale payment operations, a KIP (National Payment Institution) or EMI license is recommended.
Yes. An SPI can voluntarily upgrade to a KIP (National Payment Institution) at any time. Mandatory upgrade is required if your monthly transaction volume exceeds EUR 1.5M on average. We can support the transition process end-to-end.
Currency exchange is permitted when it is directly connected to payment services — for example, as part of a payment transaction execution. Standalone FX services require separate authorization.
Payment services and crypto activity are separate regulatory tracks in Poland. SPI covers payment services only. Crypto services require a separate registration in the Virtual Currency Register. For expanded crypto scope, MiCA/CASP compliance will be needed.
The main authorities are: Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF) for registration and supervision, General Inspector of Financial Information (GIIF) for AML/CFT oversight, Financial Ombudsman for consumer complaints, and the National Clearing House (KIR) for payment infrastructure.
Payment Initiation Services (PIS) and Account Information Services (AIS) are NOT available under SPI registration. These require a different license — either KIP (National Payment Institution) or EMI (Electronic Money Institution).
The KNF supervisory fee rate is capped at 0.025% of annual transaction volume. The exact amount varies annually and depends on your actual transaction volumes processed during the year.
Yes. Foreigners can serve as directors of an SPI company, provided they meet clean criminal record requirements in specified categories (financial crime, money laundering, terrorist financing, etc.).
Common SPI business models include: donation platforms, employer remittance services, SaaS payment gateways, PSP support services, e-wallets, crypto-integrated payment services, factoring and invoice finance, and crowdfunding platforms.
